Concentric Rings of 7 Letters

Here are three concentric ring things. Do you understand them? Do you find them helpful?
Concentric rings in 7 Letters
First
A. Ephesus: hates deeds of Nicolaitans; left first love—therefore no fellowship; Jesus among them but they aren’t with Him; didn’t realize need of Christ because of zeal for correct doctrine
B. Smyrna: no condemnation
C. Pergamum: hold fast my name, but some hold to teaching of Nicolaitans;
white stone with new name
D. Thyatira
C’. Sardis: appear alive but are dead, have a few people who have not soiled
their garments; white garments, name not erased from book of life
B’ Philadelphia: no condemnation
A.’ Laodicea: lukewarm; wealth makes comfortable—therefore no fellowship (Jesus wants to come in & eat with them); Jesus true witness but they don’t know their ignorance; didn’t realize need for Christ because of wealth

Second
A. Ephesus: hate deeds of Nicolaitans
B. Smyrna: no condemnation: tribulation leads to death leads to crown of life
C. Pergamum: some hold to teaching of Balaam & Nicolaitans

D. Thyatira

C’.Sardis: think they are alive but are dead
B’. Philadelphia: no condemnation: will be kept from hour of testing
A’.Laodicea: think they are rich but are poor

2:7--‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.’
3:21--‘He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
22 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’"

2:11-- ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.’
3:12--‘He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.

2. Hendricksen’s 7 parallel sections
(1) Christ in the midst of the lampstands (1:1-3:22) 1:3 = blessed is he who reads,
hears, & heeds & 22:6 = blessed is he who heeds
Matt. 28:20—Lo, I am with you always..

(2) The vision of heaven & the seals (4:1-7:17) [compare 6:15-16 with 19:17-18]
HAS FINAL JUDGMENT (8:1)
John 16:33—In the world you have tribulation..

(3) The seven trumpets (8:1-11:19) [parallel 7 bowls: earth; sea; river; heaven
{these 1st 4 seem to just emphasize physical destruction of universe but not
effect on man}; sores to torment people; Euphrates River (church on earth
from 10:1-11:13); we see church in heaven.] HAS FINAL JUDGMENT
(11:15)
Luke 18:7—And shall not God avenge His elect, who cry out to Him day and
night

(4) The persecuting dragon (12;1-14:20) activity of Satan (13); activity of God
(14); we see God’s wrath on dwellers on earth. HAS FINAL JUDGMENT
(14:14-20)
Gen. 3:15—And I will put enmity between you and the woman..

(5) The seven bowls (15:1-16:21) [parallel 7 trumpets: earth; sea; rivers;
heaven {these 1st 4 seem to emphasize effect destruction had on man); throne
of Satan & sores on men; Euphrates River; we see destruction of cities on
earth] HAS FINAL JUDGMENT (16:17)
Rom. 2:5—But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are
storing up wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the
righteous judgment of God.
(6) The fall of Babylon (17:1-19:21) [compare 19:17-18 with 6:15-16] HAS
FINAL JUDGMENT (19:17-21--in it we see destruction of harlot & two
beasts)
1 John 2:17—And the world passes away and the lust thereof…

(7) The great consummation (20:1-22:21): chapter 20 is church age from binding of Satan to Satan and all who dwell on earth thrown into lake of fire; [parallel to Christ in midst of lampstands: 2& 3 makes promises “to him who overcomes” 7x—21:7 says “he who overcomes shall inherit these things”; several of the promises in 2 & 3 listed in 20-22: tree of life (2:7 & 22:2, 14); not hurt by 2nd death (2:11 & 20:6, 14 & 21:8); authority over the nations
(2:26, 3:21 & 20:4); book of life (3:5 & 20:12, 15; 21:27)] HAS FINAL JUDGMENT (20:10-15—in it we see destruction of devil and death & Hades)
Romans 8:37—We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Cf. Jude 6

7. Week of 10/16—read The Song of Roland (laisse 1-149; lines 1-2009)
8. Week of 10/23—read The Song of Roland (laisse 150-291; lines 2010-4002) (11th week)
9. Week of 10/30—read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (2530 lines) (12th week)
10. Dante’s Inferno (13 weeks scheduled) 25th week
Week 1: History of Florence; map of Italy; paper on Dante; chapter 2 in
Ascent to Love
Week 2: read first canto; then read it’s footnotes; then read it again; do the
same with 2nd Canto; do the same with third Canto
Week 3: read cantos 4-8
Week 4: read cantos 9-11
Week 5: reread Cantos 1-11 and mark anything you don’t understand; read
chapter 3 in Ascent to Love
Week 6: read cantos 12-17
Week 7: read cantos 18-24
Week 8: read cantos 25-30
Week 9: read cantos 31-34
Week 10: does the Inferno have a scriptural basis? Write for me as complete
a description of hell as you can based solely on scripture.
Week 11: Read the first 4 chapters (64 pages) in Ted Donnelly’s book

Week 12: Read chapter 4 and chapter 5 in Ascent to Love
Week 13: Wrap up Dante’s Inferno—questions: thesis (What was Dante’s
purpose in writing this book?); protagonist; is there an antagonist?
11. Canterbury Tales; Fairie Queen; Augustine, Aquinas, Everyman, The Prince, Utopia, Shakespeare play, research paper (won’t be able to do all of these but remaining 11 weeks will come from some of these)
